Fall in love with museum exhibitions: with digital, everything is possible

A virtual museum is generally understood as an environment in which a set of information about a collection of pieces, a heritage set, etc. is presented. (whether this exists on a physical level or not). When talking about information, all kinds of information are understood, that is, from text, graphics, images, video, etc. Although most existing virtual museums on the network correspond to a real museum, there are some virtual museums that do not have a real museum to support it.

This is the definition that we could find in different books and web pages dedicated to the subject. But, in addition to containing such information, the virtual museum has interactivity characteristics that allow a great participation by the user.

Each of them, real museum and virtual museum, can and should bring different situations and experiences to the visitor. No one can miss the fact that the experience of direct contact with the pieces or collections of a museum is an irreplaceable experience. When we move to the museum, it's not just about going to see a priceless piece or experiencing a certain physical law with your own hands. We must also take into account the surrounding environment of the museum, the movement we make between its rooms, the possibility of stopping, observing, analyzing, etc. Although this is an experience of the real museum, there are many virtual museums that are striving so that the experience that the virtual visitor has within them is at least memorable and unrepeatable. This is how many of them practice the "one visit is not enough" strategy, so the visitor must return several times. Interactivity and the search for involvement and participation by the user are the keys to ensure it.

In virtual museums, interactivity has to be a condition, a premise from which to start working. We already know that, in principle, all web pages must have a minimum of interactivity. But in virtual museums it becomes even more important since it is about the visitor being able to get closer to a museum that he may never see, especially if it is thousands of kilometers away from the town. Interactivity in virtual museums should be understood beyond turning pages, and should focus on how, as it might be called, to "hook" the visitor. It has happened to me many times, that is, I have spent hours and hours "walking" through a virtual museum, trying to scrutinize each of its corners, participating in some public activity or sending a message to a group of professionals. And, generally, with that one visit I have not had enough. The virtual museum must contain in its pages all the possibilities that the Internet has and present them in a practical, intuitive and enjoyable way.
